The Thomas Jefferson Discussion Group
of Orlando, Florida

Meeting No. 48 - June 14, 2005
Holiday House Restaurant, Orlando, Florida

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
THOMAS JEFFERSON AND OUR LEADERSHIP TODAY:
WORLDVIEWS BUILT ON VIRTUE OR CONVENIENCE?

Over the years we have talked a lot about "worldview." It really is the foundation an individual works from during the period of their life after they are cut free from their parents' control and are left to make decisions on their own.

Last month I had the privilege to address the Free Inquiry Society of Central Florida. The title of my talk was "Thomas Jefferson and the Altar of God – Thomas Jefferson’s beliefs in a Higher Power." One question of equal interest to me (and one we talked about during the course of my presentation) is, why do we care what Thomas Jefferson’s beliefs are? I think it comes back to worldview:

  1. Many people are in awe of Jefferson, his intellect and achievements.
  2. Whatever Jefferson's views are, they must have been well thought out.
  3. We want Thomas Jefferson to agree with us! It validates our own personal worldview. Conversely, not many people like to have their worldview challenged.

Tomorrow night we'll talk about how Jefferson formed his views and how that formation differs from our the way current day leaders have their views formed. I hope you can join us.
