The Thomas Jefferson Discussion Group of Orlando, Florida
Meeting No. 28 - August 13, 2003
Chapters Bookstore, Orlando, Florida
THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
GUN CONTROL
Should gun reform, especially in light of the murder of the Councilman in
New York's City Hall, be revisited by the federal government? State
government? Or, no government? - Is a citizen's right to own guns (tanks?)
protected by the U.S. Constitution? What would Jefferson say about gun
control, in general?
What does the 2nd Amendment mean in today's world? What was it's purpose
when it was included in the Bill of Rights? Should we ban all guns? Should
we require everyone have a gun? What would Jefferson say?
Jefferson said -
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species (the
matter or method) of exercises (to achieve this), I advise the gun. While
this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and
independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that
nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind.
Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks.
-- Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785
And, -
The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is
inherent in the people; that...it is their right and duty to be at all times
armed.
-- Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824
