THIS MONTH'S TOPIC:
THE U.S. CONSTITUTION AND ITS IMPACT ON PRESENT-DAY ISSUES - PART 1
January 18th was the 200th anniversary of Mr. Jefferson's letter to Congress petitioning funding for the Lewis and Clark expedition.
On Tuesday night, we'll begin our discussion on the U.S. Constitution and Jefferson's role in its development (he was in France, but very involved) by defining the issues debated and the compromises settled on and relate them to the issues our Country faces today (e.g. nothing in the Constitution allowed for the Federal Government to purchase the Louisiana Territory in 1803. This was a source of much concern for, then President, Jefferson. What if Congress had refused?).
Or, instead of the agreements struck in 1787, what if they had been some of the other things proposed? How would these affect the issues we are struggling with today?
These issues will help define the subjects for our future meetings on the Constitution.
