The Thomas Jefferson Discussion Group of Orlando, Florida
Meeting No. 12 - April 23, 2002
Chapters Bookstore, Orlando, Florida
THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: THE MILITARY'S RESPONSIBILITY TO THE ENEMY
For the past few weeks, the Israeli army has surrounded the office of PLO leader Yasir Arafat. As Governor of Virginia during our revolutionary war, Thomas Jefferson was confronted with the enemy on several levels, as well:
- in the context of Virginia's participation in the wider struggle of the recently proclaimed independent colonies
- on a personal level, when the reports came to him that the enemy was on its way to Monticello
On Tuesday night our discussion will center around:
- How did Jefferson react in his leadership role on both levels?
- What are (were) the legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities (if any) of a country's army when directly confronting the enemy's leaders?
- What are the besieged leader's responsibilities?
