The Thomas Jefferson Discussion Group of Orlando, Florida
Meeting No. 8 - December 18, 2001
Chapters Bookstore, Orlando, Florida
THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: CHALLENGES OF A NEW NATION, PART I
Compare the challenges of the new government in Afghanistan to the problems the United States had as a newly-independent confederation of states, i.e. the challenge of bringing rival tribal groups together under a unified government doesn't seem to be all that different from the challenges America faced creating a unified government from thirteen independent "states".
Mr. Jefferson was not in Philadelphia in 1787. He was in France as our ambassador, offering the advice of America's experience to those French revolutionaries seking to transform their government. His perception of the strengths and weaknesses of our own new Constitution provides an interesting basis for the model he attempted to promote to Europe.
