What is the Jefferson Project?

Our mission is to build and maintain a World Class workforce for the domestic electronics manufacturing industry, while showcasing state-of-the-art equipment and developing emerging assembly technologies. The need for a real-world educational environment, the convergence of academia and industry, is based on the principles of Concurrent Education.

Why is the traditional educational system inadequate?

The technology utilized in assembling electronic products is highly complex. Continuous improvements in equipment and assembly techniques constantly outpace the ability of existing schools to accommodate industry's need for qualified personnel.

What is different about the Jefferson Project?

The concept uses a state-of-the-art, for-profit business as the environment for learning during the entire tenure of a student's education. Hands-on experience in every facet of the manufacturing operation will teach real-world skills and problem solving. In addition, product developers and equiptment manufacturers can observe the latest electronic packaging technologies in a real-world application.

What kind of electronic products will the facility manufacture?

All kinds. The Jefferson Electronic Manufacturing Center, or JEM Center, is a contract manufacturing facility. It provides manufacturing services for other companies.

Why should a company that designs electronic products have them assembled by someone else?

Cost! Typically, the development of a product manufacturing line requires an investment exceeding a million dollars. The overhead needed to sustain the capability is very high as well. Many companies have found it desirable to partner with a company specializing in manufacturing to minimize cost and risk.

Where does the education part come in?

The Jefferson Institute of Technology is co-located with the JEM Center. Students will receive an intensive, continually updated academic program, using the manufacturing business as their classroom. Specialized training programs are offered. Two year and four year programs are planned.
